  • Census Returns for Swanage 1841 – 1911
  • Swanage Parish Registers 1563 – 1812, together with listings for other parishes in Purbeck.
  • Swanage Burial & Cemetery Records – including Northbrook and Godlingston, together with some tombstone inscriptions for most Purbeck Parishes.
  • Swanage Street Directories 1911,1916 and 1934
  • Swanage Rate Books 1883 – 1923 (copies on CD) and Poor Books (includes copies from 1750 – 1794 and early 19th century)
  • Swanage Trade Directories for 1793 to 1939 and specific Public House Landlords Index.

  • Ordnance Survey Maps – Large Scale editions for Swanage surveyed 1886 – 1980’s

  • Swanage building plans index 1870’s – 1970’s (most originals are held at the Dorset History Centre in Dorchester).  In addition the Museum also holds many original local building plans from the firm of Hardy’s the Builders (1864 – 1985)
  • Local Newspapers on microfilm covering the years 1854, 1858, 1859, 1862, 1875 and a continuous run from 1877 to 1936 (with the exception of 1896, 1897, 1911 and 1912
  • Photographs of Swanage and local people from the 1860’s to date, many kindly provided by enquirers who have used the Museum resources in the course of their own research.
  • Swanage Sailing Club Records, including their photographic collection from 1935 – 2005
  • The Robert Field Collection of researched and catalogued works by artists inspired by their visits to Swanage and Purbeck –  this multivolume and ongoing collection of example prints of the work of some 700+ artists can be viewed in the Museum.
  • The Sheila Ford Collection of original research into Purbeck families, which includes an A-Z of local names, with family trees available in many instances.
  • Research Notes for Family Trees prepared by Museum volunteers, in addition to copies of such research kindly donated by researchers who have used the Museum’s facilities.
  • Research Notes and files compiled by the late David Lewer, local historian and author of many books on Swanage.  Includes extensive research on the Mowlem and Burt families together with local newspaper cuttings relating to local history topics from the 1930’s to 2005.
  • Purbeck Society Library – a collection compiled by the Purbeck Society  of Purbeck and Dorset related books.
  • David Lewer Library –  a book collection compiled by the late David Lewer.
  • Files of copy material on most topics and themes relating to the history and development of Swanage  – some of this extensive range are also held at the Museum and are available there upon request.
