Swanage Museum was set up in 1976 by a group of enthusiastic local artists and historians to conserve and house ever increasing collections of artefacts relating to the archaeology geology and industrial history of the area. Then and in all subsequent expansion of collections, development of services, and relocations the Museum remains fully volunteer-run.
THE TITHE BARN MUSEUM
The Old Tithe Barn was the Museum’s first location from 1976 until 2005/6 when it was forced to relocate because of structural problems with that building – the Tithe Barn’s location was difficult to find, poorly signposted and its interior space underused. At this point space at the back of the Purbeck District Council run Heritage Centre in Swanage was offered to the Museum
